Nashville

Nashville has quietly become one of the most fun long-weekend cities in the country, and it travels well for island families: it’s walkable downtown, cheaper than the coasts, and the whole city runs on live music. Broadway’s honky-tonks are free to walk into with a band on every floor, the Ryman and the Grand Ole Opry are bucket-list rooms, and the food — hot chicken, barbecue, meat-and-three — is a trip on its own.

Getting there from Hawaiʻi

There’s no nonstop from Honolulu to Nashville (BNA) — you’ll connect once, usually through a West Coast or Texas hub (LAX, SFO, SEA, PHX, DFW, or DEN). Plan on a long travel day, and if you can, break it up with a night on the coast on the way out. Compare your dates for the best routing and fares:

When to go

• Spring (April–May) and fall (September–October) are the sweet spots — mild, green, and made for patios and porches.
• Summer is hot and humid with afternoon storms; it’s peak tourist season, so downtown is packed and hotels are pricey.
• Big weekends fill up fast: CMA Fest (June) and football Saturdays draw huge crowds — great energy, but book early and expect surge pricing.

What to do

• Lower Broadway — bar-hop the honky-tonks (Tootsie’s, Robert’s Western World) for free live sets; go early to beat the bachelorette rush.
• The Ryman & the Grand Ole Opry — a show at either is the real Nashville; day tours of the Ryman are worth it even without tickets.
• Eat — hot chicken (Hattie B’s, Prince’s), barbecue, and a classic meat-and-three lunch; save room for a honky-tonk beer later.
• Day trips — historic Franklin and the rolling countryside of Leiper’s Fork are a quick, pretty drive south.

Getting around

Downtown is walkable and rideshares are easy, but Nashville is spread out and the best food and day trips are away from Broadway — a rental car makes the trip. Pick up at BNA and you’ve got Franklin, the Opry, and the meat-and-threes all in reach.
