New York City
Broadway, museums, the food — the bucket-list city trip, and how to get there from the islands.
New York City is the big bucket-list mainland trip — Broadway, world-class museums, the food, the shopping, and the pure energy of the place. It’s also the farthest and longest haul from the islands, so it takes a little planning.
Getting there
There’s no nonstop from Hawaiʻi right now, so you’ll connect — usually through a West Coast hub (LA, San Francisco, or Seattle) into JFK, Newark (EWR), or LaGuardia. Red-eyes can save a day. Because routings and prices vary a lot, compare your dates for flights and a hotel near a subway line:

When to go
- Spring and fall have the best weather and the city at its liveliest.
- December is magical (holiday lights, windows) but crowded and pricey; January–February are the cheapest and quietest.
- Summer is hot and humid — fine if you don’t mind the heat, and often good hotel value.
Local tips
- Stay near a subway line — it’s the fastest, cheapest way around; tap on with OMNY or a MetroCard.
- Broadway on a budget: the TKTS booth and lotteries offer same-day discount show tickets.
- Walk and layer — you’ll cover miles, and the weather can swing in a day.
