The West Coast

The West Coast is the everyday mainland run for Hawaiʻi families — a long weekend of Costco and Target damage, a game or a concert, or catching up with family who moved to the continent. It’s close (about 5–6 hours), it’s frequent, and fares swing a lot, so it pays to watch them.

Where locals go

• Los Angeles / Orange County — Disneyland, shopping, Dodgers/Lakers, and the biggest Hawaiʻi diaspora, so lots of family and island food.
• San Francisco / Bay Area — family, tech-town visits, and a jumping-off point for wine country.
• Seattle — Alaska Airlines’ hub (tons of Hawaiʻi nonstops), Mariners/Seahawks, and the Pacific Northwest.
• Portland — no sales tax (shopping!), foodie town, easy and low-key.

Getting there

Hawaiʻi is well connected to the West Coast — Hawaiian, Alaska, Southwest, Delta, and United all fly nonstop to at least one of LA, SFO, SEA, or PDX, with Alaska and Southwest especially strong on the West Coast. Fares move constantly, so compare your exact dates for flights, hotels, and a rental car:

When to go

• Shoulder seasons (spring, fall) tend to have the softest fares; summer and the winter holidays run high.
• Southwest and Alaska sales are worth catching — set a fare alert and pounce.
• A rental car is almost always worth it on the mainland (everything’s spread out) — book it with the flight.

What locals do

• Shop: the big-box and outlet runs locals can’t do at home — many fly back with an extra checked bag.
• Games & shows: catch a team or a concert that skips the islands.
• Family: the West Coast is where a lot of ʻohana landed — the main reason for the trip.
