Moped & Scooter Rental on Maui

Moped and scooter rental on Maui is strong as the many small towns on the island are perfect for getting around on scooters and mopeds. There are many moped / scooter rental shops in Maui like Maui Scooter Shack, 808 Mopeds, Kihei Moped Company, Hawaiian Cruisers, Moped City Maui and more. Depending on where you live or where you’re staying on Maui, you’ll have a variety of shops to rent from, so shop around and get pricing on the various rental time frames (half day, full day, etc…) as well as weekly rental deals.

The scooters below were rented in Kihei from Hawaiian Cruisers in the Azeka Shopping Plaza in Kihei. We didn’t need anything crazy, so we went with the best deal for a full-day rental. The staff was super nice and professional. They had a variety of scooter and moped types as well as motorcycles from 50cc (pictured above) and 300c scooters to two passenger models and even Harley Davidson Fat Boy Lo motorcycles.

Due to proximity of the the rental location and reviews, we went with Hawaiian Cruisers ( They don’t offer a Kama’aina discount, but they are a nice, family owned business and the rates were comparable to other places. The rental process was fast as well as the return procedure. Another nice thing about this scooter rental shop in Maui is that there’s a large parking lot in the plaza as well as a decent sized one in the rear of the plaza. This is great for first time riders to practice learning how to ride a scooter. Even for those, like myself, that have ridden scooters and mopeds in the past, re-learning the steering and getting to know where the brakes, turning signals, and throttle are is important. Also, different scooter models will have different features and placements for control mechanisms. Most scooter shops will offer a helmet and lock. Definitely take the lock and lock-up as often as possible. Also, it’s definitely advisable to take and wear the helmet.

Should you rent a scooter when in Maui? If you have time, you should definitely should!  It’s a great way to explore the island.  On the particular day we rented mopeds, we rode all the way down to La Perouse Bay stopping at all the Wailea and Kihei beaches.  Ride, swim / snorkel, repeat.  It was one of the best days on Maui, without a doubt.  I was about to not research Maui scooter rental prices and do other activities instead, but I’m glad I did.  Do you have a a favorite scooter rental shop on Maui?  Let us know!

Maui Ocean Center Aquarium

The Maui Ocean Center Aquarium in Wailuku is definitely on many top things to do in Maui lists. It’s a great for families and a nice stop on a day trip to or from Lahiaina or the north Maui resorts. This aquarium on Maui shouldn’t be missed especially the glass tunnel (pictured below).

This site is about Kama’aina discounts, so we’ll touch on that first along with other Maui Ocean Center coupon discount deals, promo code, and seasonal deals. The Maui Ocean Center kamaaina discount rates details is avaialbe on the main online ticket page ( As of this writing, the discount is Adults $18.95, Children $9.95, Senior $16.95 with coupon code: KM2018. The Ocean Center at Maalea in Wailuku boasts outdoor and indoor areas.  You can see sea turtles, stingrays, sharks and many other native sea life at the aquarium.  There are plenty of interactive elements for kids and even areas where they can touch and feel some of the sea creatures.  It’s not the largest aquarium, so you’ll be able to get in and out quickly or take it slow and spend the day there.  The gift shop is great for souvenirs and the restaurant has a decent view.  Check out the website for more details and photos.

Where is the Maui Ocean Center located? The location is fairly convenient as it’s on the way to/from Lahaina and all the resorts in West Maui; as well as being near Kihei and the Kahului airport (OGG).  Another convenient thing about the location is that it’s a Maui bus stop.  So, you can get there for cheap on public transportation.  The location details are below:

Is the Maui Ocean Center Kama’aina Discount Worth It?

If you are a Hawaii resident, you should definitely take advantage of this great Maui Kama’aina discount.  It’s a 35% discount off the retail admission price, so I’d say it’s a very good deal when it comes to Kamaaina rates on the islands.  The packages offer discounts on the food at the restaurant on premises as well. A lot of food places will offer 20% discounts with restrictions, so this is a pretty generous discount.

There are many things to do in Maui, but not all are family friendly. This Maui destination is definitely great for all ages. Whether you’re a local resident of Hawaii or a tourist visiting Maui, the Maui Ocean Center is a great place for families, couples and anyone else interested in marine life indigenous to the Hawaiian islands.

Best Loco Moco on Maui?

Search for the best loco moco on Maui? My cousin lives on Maui and took me to a local Hawaiian spot which is known for their loco mocos. It was probably the best loco moco I’ve had. I say this knowing that food preference is a very personal thing. So, for me, the steak and fried rice loco moco at 808 Grindz Cafe is the best one I’ve had so far.

Picture of the best loco moco on Maui at 808 Grindz Cafe in Kihei
Every spot that offers this local dish uses their own loco moco recipe. This plate differed in that it featured steak as the protein versus the traditional hamburger patty. But really, it’s all about the loco moco sauce. What I liked about the 808 Grindz Cafe sauce is that it is fairly light. Other Hawaiian loco moco gravy recipes I’ve had are super heavy and really like a thick gravy you’d eat with mashed potatoes. However it’s served, whether on spam, Portuguese sausage or on burger patties, most people are all about the loco moco gravy.

Best Loco Moco Plate on Maui?

Besides the light gravy, I liked that the steak was cooked perfectly.  More often than not, steak is over-cooked; not at 808 Grindz Cafe.  It was definitely perfectly medium with great texture and flavor.  It was such a big portion I didn’t think I could finish and was happy with the thought of having leftovers for lunch.  Yeah, that didn’t happen.  I pretty much demolished it.  I couldn’t stop eating it.  It was definitely da kine.  If you’re looking for an authentic Kihei restaurant, check this place out.  This local spot was one of the best places to eat in Kihei, from my point of view.  The funny thing is, is that an L&L’s is a couple doors down.  But, the locals know what’s up.

The location I visited was at the Pi’ilani Safeway Plaza in Kihei (there are other locations in Lahaina and in Kona on the Big Island).  Here are the details of the Kihei location:

Address: 225 Piikea Ave, Kihei, HI 96753
Phone: (808) 868-2429
Hours: 7am – 2pm (Err Day)

Other Spots Making Dakine Loco Moco on Maui

I’m sure some would disagree with my choice, but from checking out Yelp reviews, there are definitely many that would agree with me.  Of course, other places to get this local dish are: Da Kitchen Cafe, Kihei Caffe, Sunrise Cafe, Local Foods, Aloha Mixed Plate and many others.  Which place has the best loco moco on Maui?  Let us know what you think and check out mo’ Da Kine!
